The Hot-Start Trap: +31% After 71 Bets, Break-Even After the Next 51

Our first strategy made +31% in six weeks and then went flat. What changed, why hot starts fool everyone, and how to protect yourself from your own best results.

Last reviewed November 3, 2026

Key takeaways

  • >Eredivisie overs 1.50–2.50: +€220.80 (+31.1%) on the first 71 bets, +€4.80 (+0.9%) on the next 51
  • >The hit rate fell from 69% to 51%, almost exactly break-even at average odds of 1.95
  • >The league scored 3.94 goals a match to 15 September and 3.51 after: a real but temporary effect
  • >You notice a rule because it started well, which is exactly why its start is unreliable
  • >Split every result in two, ask what was unusual about the good half, and keep tracking after you publish

The most dangerous moment in betting is not a losing streak. It is a strategy that starts brilliantly. A hot start feels like proof, gets shared, gets more money behind it, and then quietly stops working. We have a real example of it, with our own numbers.

+31% in six weeks

On 16 September 2026, Captain Hindsight's first strategy looked like this:

Eredivisie: back every Over line priced 1.50–2.50 at Toto before kickoff, €10 flat.

Even the luck test agreed it was interesting: at 71 bets, chance alone explains about ±22%, and +31% was outside that band. This was the result we built our first video around.

And then the next 51 bets

Same rule, same bookmaker, same kind of prices (average odds 1.94 against 1.95). The hit rate fell from 69% to 51%, which at those odds is almost exactly break-even (1 ÷ 1.95 = 51.3%). Week by week, the profit looked like this:

Four big weeks in August made the whole result. Since then: roughly flat. (There were no Eredivisie matches between 21 September and early October.)

What changed: the goals

The strategy bets that matches will have lots of goals. Early in the season, they did:

Early in a season there is little current-season data to price totals on. When a league suddenly scores more than expected, prices on overs can be too long for a while, and a rule that backs overs looks like genius. Then the prices catch up, or the scoring settles, or both, and the edge disappears. That is the typical shape of a hot start: a real effect, but a temporary one, measured on a sample too short to tell the difference.

Why hot starts fool everyone

  • You notice the rule because it started well. Nobody builds a video around a rule that lost its first six weeks. The selection itself guarantees that the rules we look at had lucky or unusual starts.
  • Early results get the most attention. By the time the result has regressed, everyone has moved on.
  • The luck test cannot save you on its own. +31% on 71 bets passed it. A short, unusual period can produce a result outside the luck band for reasons that will not repeat.

How to protect yourself

  1. Split the result in two. If one half made all the money, you have a stretch, not a pattern.
  2. Ask what was unusual about the good half. Here: a goal rate the league did not keep up.
  3. Keep tracking after you publish. We re-ran the same rule seven weeks later. That is this article. The full-period result (+18.5% on 122 bets) is still positive, but almost all of it is August.
  4. Paper-bet before you believe. A rule should prove itself on matches that had not been played when you found it. See Paper betting.
